Breeding Philosophy

Selection Parameters

The 5 most important characteristics for me in selecting bulls are:
  1. Temperament - all bulls are handled with a cattle cane on the back  until they will tolerate being touched without moving. Most bulls I can get my hand on. Any bull that sticks its head up in the air and snorts at me is culled.
  2. Feet - any bull or cow with bad feet is culled.
  3. Thickness (EMA) - I only select thick bulls both subjectively and by scan.  I hate slab sided bulls and cull them immediately.
  4. Calving ease - I do not use bulls that have big calves and result in pulling calves. We are lucky if we pull one calf every few years.
  5. High Growth Rate  - I aim to keep our bulls ranking in the top 5% for the breed for 200, 400 and 600 day growth rate while controlling excessive mature weight and frame.
